Abstract

Dit onderzoek heeft betrekking op wat uit wetenschappelijke literatuur bekend is over de effecten van korte vrijheidsstraffen in vergelijking met andere typen straffen of langere vrijheidsstraffen op het bereiken van verschillende strafdoelen. De hoofdvraag van het onderzoek is: Wat is bekend uit Nederlands en internationaal onderzoek over het effect van korte vrijheidsstraffen in vergelijking met andere typen straffen of langere vrijheidsstraffen op het bereiken van de verschillende strafdoelen? More than two thirds of people released from prison in the Netherlands spent less than three months in custody. The Dutch Council for the Administration of Criminal Justice and Protection of Juveniles (RSJ) states that such short prison stays have a limited effect on penal goals and therefore advise to reduce the use of short prison stays in judicial practice. In the present study, we investigate what is known in the scientific literature about the effect of short custodial sentences on penal goals in comparison to other types of sentences or longer custodial sentences. The main research question is: What is known from Dutch and international scientific research about the extent to which penal goals are reached with short custodial sentences in comparison to other types of sentences or longer custodial sentences?
