Het doel van dit onderzoek is om naar aanleiding van de invoering van het geregistreerd partnerschap en de openstelling van het huwelijk voor paren van gelijk geslacht inzicht te verkrijgen in het functioneren van het huidige relatierecht. Daarbij gaat het in de eerste plaats om de vraag of zich knelpunten voordoen die het goed functioneren van de wetgeving in de weg staan. In de tweede plaats is het van belang welke rol het geregistreerd partnerschap naast het opengestelde huwelijk vervult.
