Abstract
Due to the adverse psychological and social effects of crime-related feelings of unsafety, the Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice (MSJ) researches these feelings with the yearly population-wide survey 'Veiligheidsmonitor' (safety monitor). In this project, we suggest a method to use social media data as an additional real-time information source which represents a new approach in the MSJ By measuring the relative amount of crime-related content over time as a proxy for feelings of unsafety, the results depict a clear increase of that content through recent years together with a strong association with crime-related real-world events. This method is a basis for future research toward real-time safety monitoring instruments.
