Abstract
Identity fraud and theft are frequently thought of as problems that are an issue mostly in the United States and – to a lesser degree – Great Britain. Yet there is growing evidence that identity fraud is spreading across Europe, as a result of globalisation and digitalisation. Taking on another person’s identity no longer requires a forged passport. Look-alike fraud has been particularly popular in recent years, and is the main reason for the introduction of biometric passports. Identify fraud and theft is becoming a reality across a wide range of society’s sectors (the labour market, social security). Advances in digitisation offer identity thieves new opportunities to illicitly extract confidential data - including account numbers and passwords - from computers,. This themed issue attempts to offer an insight into the offence of identity fraud and theft, as well as insights into the various strategies for combating the phenomenon.
